Dynamite Warrior, which has recently found distribution in the U.S., is the latest Thai martial arts actioner to garner such attention. Though still primarily a muy thai exploitation flick, replete with novice plot and pacing problems, Dynamite Warrior is a huge leap forward for Thai filmmaking, mixing high production values, special effects, and intelligent comedy to create a loveably flawed experience that comes dangerously close to being a fully functional piece of art.

Set in pre-industrial Thailand in the late 1800s, Dynamite Warrior refers to a mysterious, masked folk hero known as Jone Bang Fai (Dan Chupong) who goes around reclaiming stolen water buffalo and returning them to their rightful owners. Though his furious feet and hands are more than a match for the riff-raff that stand in his way, he also deploys shrieking salvos of exploding rockets against his enemies for good measure. Jone Bang Fai, who in typical Thai fashion has several other names (the most commonly used being Siang), is searching for one cattle thief in particular — identifiable only by a raised tattoo on his chest — who 10 years ago slaughtered his family. The murderous rustler also happens to have magical powers, so the added firepower will probably come in handy.
